Katrina Girl Asks Her Rescuer to Her JROTC Ball

A retired Air Force veteran is reuniting with the three-year old girl he saved from Hurricane Katrina – and our hearts couldn’t be happier.

The photo of Mike Maroney hugging three-year old LaShay Brown, went viral in the midst of the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 – a truth that we, here on the Coast, remember like it was yesterday.

They found each other two years ago, when the Twitter campaign #FindKatrinaGirl went viral – and ever since, the two have stayed a part of each other’s lives.

And just twelve years after their first meeting, Brown has asked that Maroney accompany her to her JROTC Military Ball.

Maroney, who was battling post traumatic stress disorder when the first photo was taken, explained during their first reunion: “Your hug, it helped me through hard days, and rough days. You rescued me more than I rescued you.”
